Year 5/6 Topic Notes - Autumn 2008

This term our topic is 'Sound and Light' and has a scientific focus around these two subjects. We will also be studying electricity and Earth in Space in Science. As part of our work, we will have a visit from 'Starlab' later in the term. Children in Yr 5/6 having their own Science homework books and some of the home learning will be based on these topics.
In Technology, the children will be designing and making steady hand games and / or quiz boards.
In Literacy, we are studying traditional tales, myths, legends and fables. The children will be writing their own versions and creating shadow puppets and plays for performance. We will be reading Michael Morpurgo's 'Butterfly Lion' in guided reading this term. Spellings will take place in groups as before. Each week, the spellings will be on two sheets for practise, using 'look, say, cover, write, check.' One sheet is to be completed during the morning registration period and the second to be done each night at home. Your child should bring their spelling folder home each evening and return to school with it on the following day. Tests will take place in groups on Mondays. Other Literacy work such as spelling challenges will be detailed in the home learning booklet as usual, along with any topic linked home learning.
Maths lessons take please in groups, details of which will follow. Maths home learning tasks are set on Fridays.
We are studying a mystery place in Geography this term, but are unable to give any further details since it is a secret! Our big History topic is scheduled for later this year.
Music lessons will include study of how different instruments create sound.
In ICT, the children will be working on a control program called 'Junior Control Insight' as well as using the computer for handling data, writing and research.
Art will be linked with the work on shadow puppets and Divali. We will be exploring colour and studying the artist Monet.
Tag rugby lessons will take place on Mondays. We will also be working on netball skills and gymnastics - and a little dance.
In RE, the children will be studying the Lord's Prayer and writing their own versions. They will think about how we need to be alone sometimes as did Jesus, and explore meditation. They will look at the Hindu Aum symbol and the festival of Divali which is linked to the Ramayana work.
PSHE work will include taking responsibility, other people's lifestyles and Fair Trade issues.
